Search engine optimisation isn't the only strategy you need to implement in order to enhance and maintain your Web site's rankings in the top search engines. Obtaining links from relevant, quality Web sites to yours is also a key strategy as many of the top search engines use this to measure how "popular" your site is, and therefore this helps determine how highly in the results pages your Web site ranks.
The best way to obtain these links is through 'organic linking' e.g. creating content that people want to link to. The key to this tactic is to ensure your Web site contains regularly updated, interesting and unique information, and that the text for your links (anchor text) contain keywords that are relevant to the content and to key search terms. One of the easiest ways to implement this is to develop a blog. Search engines love fresh new content, and this is one of the easiest ways to keep your Web site up-to-date, plus creating regular keyword-optimised 'posts' (articles) that provide authoritative comment on a specific topic will increase your chances of other sites wanting to link back to yours.
