PDL was founded in 1937 in Christchurch, New Zealand by Sir Robertson Stewart with 12 staff. Nearly seventy years later, the company employs over 2000 people, enjoys sales of NZD350m across three continents and its products can be found in almost every home or office in New Zealand.

Schneider Electric acquired PDL in 2001. Schneider is present in over 130 countries and its leading brands include Merlin Gerin, Square D and Telemecanique. As part of the Schneider group, PDL products continue to be sold around the world.

The Brief

PDL commissioned Avatar to redevelop three of their Web sites servicing their New Zealand, Australian and international markets in early 2005. The brief included the design and development of a comprehensive product database to be shared by all three sites, with the capability of serving up specific products to users of each country's Web site.

The Challenges

To produce a creative concept that worked within tight brand guidelines
To develop a database which could store tens of thousands of products
To allow database access specific to one Web site

Following very specific brand guidelines, we created a clean, fresh look for the site, which worked in harmony with the style of PDL's products. It also included:

Prominent area for brand news and featured products
Easy to access and easy to navigate comprehensive product database
Comprehensive database search facilities
Flash animation showcasing the product range
