The World's Most Popular Web Sites

Written by Brydie Meek, Published August 2008

Not surprisingly, the world’s top two favourites Web sites, Yahoo! and Google are well known brands that have established online reputations. The third place getter, however, is a relative newcomer to the online scene. Charging up the popularity ranks, Youtube.com had the larger, more established Web sites looking over their shoulders. So much so, that Google bought the site in 2006.

The Gold Goes To…

According to Alexa, the gold medal for the most popular site in the world goes to Yahoo!. Around 34% of the Web site’s users come from the United States, with Yahoo! mail adding weight to these statistics. Interesting details on this gold winner include:

  • Close to 30% of the world’s Internet users visit this site
  • Revenue is approximately US$6.7 billion per annum
  • Over 62,000 sites link to Yahoo!
  • Around half the users of Yahoo! visit the site for Yahoo! Mail.

The Silver Goes To…

It’s no surprise that Google.com makes the medal dais in the popularity stakes, with the silver medal going to the Web giant that is now a household name.

Whilst Yahoo! has won the popularity contest at the current time of writing, Google.com has undoubtedly harnessed the ability to reap the financial rewards more so than Yahoo!:

  • Over 40% of Google.com users are from the US
  • Revenue is approximately US$16.59 billion per annum
  • Over 310,000 sites link to Google.com
  • Only a small percentage of Google.com users (14%) use the site for mail.

The Bronze Goes To…

The bronze medal, for the third most popular site on the globe, goes to Youtube.com.

The site is younger than its popular rivals above, having been around for only 3 years and has a massive following from around the world. Some interesting facts about the site include:

  • Youtube.com is popular in Japan, with around 7% of users coming from there
  • Private ownership with a revenue of between US$50-100 million per annum
  • Over 85,000 sites link to Youtube.com.
