Instant desktop web search

Friday, July 24th, 2009

Yahoo has partnered up with US company DeviceVM to bring ‘instant search’ to PC desktops. DeviceVM’s product, Splashtop, already lets users access email, chat, share photos or surf the Web seconds after turning on their PC, and from September, Splashtop-powered PCs will provide a Yahoo branded search box on start-up, bypassing the user’s regular Web browser and search engine.

With Splashtop already pre-installed on 10 million PCs including brands such as Sony, Acer and LG, and estimates that this will reach 40 million by the end of this year, instant search is one of the ways Yahoo hopes to reclaim market share from search giant, Google.

We’ll be interested to see if this deal has as dramatic an impact on market share as Yahoo hopes.
