Lessons From 2015 For A More Profitable 2016
2015 was a big year for web marketing, solidifying some trends that had been growing for a while now. Perhaps it’s best summarised by the announcement from Google that half of all worldwide searches are now occurring on a mobile device. For web marketers this didn’t come as a shock, but it hammered home the importance of marketing for mobile devices. It’s no surprise then that some of the top trends of 2015 have been based around mobile devices. These include:
Fluid Design. Designing for mobile devices isn’t just about making sure it all fits on the screen. The website needs to flow smoothly, loading in sequential order with a call to action immediately visible. That’s why 2015 has seen more traditional “mobile” elements incorporated into full-sized desktop websites. It’s better to create a holistic design that addresses both audiences seamlessly.
Apps. If it seems like there’s an app for anything these days, that’s because it’s true. Even businesses and retailers are beginning to utilize commercial apps, such as the massive online retailer YesStyle, which offers special deals and discounts for application users.
Local Listings. Because of the high mobile use – especially smart phones – it’s become increasingly essential to have your Google+ listings properly optimised to take advantage of people shopping, eating and searching on the go. Through Google you can provide location, phone number, opening hours and service information, crucial in helping customers make decisions.
Smart phone usage is expected to increase, so it’s a safe bet that these trends will continue into 2016. In fact, Google values mobile device users so highly that this year it installed an algorithm to penalise sites that aren’t optimised for mobile – over the next year, the effects of this will show more strongly. The biggest lesson we can gain from 2015 is that mobile optimisation is not a flash in the pan, it’s a critical part of modern web design and marketing. If you haven’t already started making changes towards a mobile site, now is the time to do so.
Besides that, other trends that are predicted to make a big impact in 2016 are:
App Indexing. Google recently introduced application indexing, which allows applications to show up in search results for keywords. This has a huge impact: if people can find app install buttons through searches for a topic rather than a search for the app itself, it widens the potential audience massively.
Video Ads. YouTube, Facebook and even Twitter continue to swell with video content, and all these major players will be offering advertising and marketing options in 2016. Those who utilise the medium well stand to make big gains.
