We’ve been reflecting in the office on how the online world has changed so much since we started way back in 1998. Back then, the internet was a new medium that people were trying to understand and it had limited value for them. Roll the clock forward to 2016 and it’s now an integral part of our daily lives that we can’t do without. It’s exciting to imagine what we’ll be doing online in 18 more years in 2034.

To kick off our newsletter this year, we have a useful article on simple SEO tips you can put into action and a useful guide to guest blogging, plus our usual assortment of morsels.

In terms of techniques, search engine optimisation (SEO) is a deep rabbit hole. You can go down to extremely complicated layers of technical nuance. However, this isn’t a necessity by any means, you can add a lot of SEO value to your site through simple methods that are logical, intuitive and don’t require you to be an expert. SEO is so much about knowing your audience and understanding your products, which coupled with some basic internet know-how can make a huge difference to your traffic and marketing opportunities.

  1. Read up on your area of expertise and find gaps in the content. You know your product, and you know the kinds of questions and needs that your customers have. Take a look at what other people are offering in terms of blog posts, tools and resources, and use your understanding to look for gaps where there isn’t much content, or isn’t much of value. If you’re already ranking in the top 10-20 places for certain keywords, these are a good place to start for some quick rewards. Use Google’s Keyword Suggestion Tool to optimise your content for what keywords your target market are searching on.
  2. Ask yourself what you would link to. Building strong back links from other websites is the cornerstone of SEO, and you don’t need to construct a complex strategy. Most of the best links come naturally, and the best way to make content that people will naturally link to is to ask yourself what you personally would feel compelled to share on your social networks or on a blog post.
  3. Gain industry credibility. Again, the best way to get links is organically, and that means forming bread-and-butter interpersonal relationships that go beyond the computer screen. No coding knowledge is required to attend conferences, participate in discussions and forums, contribute to industry-relevant publications and to simply network and make connections. Over time, you’ll find yourself being linked to as an authority and valuable resource.
  4. Make your site tasty for Google crawlers. A lot of older website designs aren’t particularly robot friendly – that is, they don’t provide enough information for the automatic system Google uses to categorise websites. Review your robots.txt setup, setup a sitemap.xml file, create regular fresh content, optimise internal linking and review Webmaster Tools to see how the Googlebot is faring on your website. Google also won’t display your website on their mobile search pages if you don’t have a mobile friendly website.
  5. Install a plugin for on-page optimisations. If you have a WordPress based website, plugins take much of the hard work out of optimising each page for the title, meta tags, description and keywords. We suggest Yoast or All In One SEO as good plugin options.

These simple SEO tips mean you don’t have to be an SEO expert to better optimise your website. With Google leaning more and more towards natural, human-oriented results, simply making connections and creating content that you yourself would find engaging is a big step.
