How To Use Virtual Reality To Your Advantage

If you’ve heard of the term ‘virtual reality’ but you’re not exactly sure what it means, fear not. Let’s start with a definition from our trusty online reference companion, Wikipedia.

def:Virtual reality (VR) is a technology which allows a user to interact with a computer-simulated environment, be it a real or imagined one. Most current virtual reality environments are primarily visual experiences… but some simulations include additional sensory information, such as sound through speakers or headphones.”

An avatar is a representation of a user in a multi-user virtual reality environment. We chose the name ‘Avatar’ for the company because we help our clients to create a successful ‘avatar’, or representation, of themselves on the Internet.

We’re going to look specifically at the way you can enhance your online business with a virtual tour, a ‘virtual reality’ technology.

Virtual Tours

Virtual tours can be created from either video or photographic material. Many virtual tours are created from a sequence of photographs taken by a camera at a fixed point. As the camera is rotated, a ‘panoramic’ vista is created. The resulting images are ‘stitched’ together using specialist software and when displayed to the viewer, they generate the impression of ‘looking round’ for oneself.

Video based virtual tours can be more like mini-movies, with changes of scene and camera movement (view an example here). Music or commentary can also be used to great effect on virtual tours.

Virtual tours are used by a number of businesses to promote and market their services and products including: accommodation providers, real estate agents, architects, tourist attractions and e-commerce / sales based businesses.
