Web Site Design & Web Marketing Definitions : A

Alt text
Alt text is displayed when you hold your mouse over an image.

Anchor text
This is the text on a Web page that works as a link, for example “Click here”.

Attachment
File included with email or other form of message.

Bandwidth
Size of the data pipeline. The larger the bandwidth, the more amount of data that can flow.

Below the fold
The part of a Web page that cannot be seen without scrolling the page.

Blog
Web LOG is a journal kept on the Internet. This journal is often updated daily and contains all information that the person maintaining the BLOG (the blogger) wishes to share with the world. The term also applies to Web sites dedicated to a particular topic and being updated with the latest news, views and trends.

BMP (.bmp) Bitmap image
A standard image format used primarily on the Windows Platform. The image data is stored without applying any compression.

Bookmarks
By using bookmarks, you can store your favourite Web addresses on your Web browser. (On Internet Explorer, this facility is called ‘Favorites’)

Branding
The process of creating a brand, the visual, emotional, rational, and cultural image associated with a company or a product.

Broken link
This is a link that doesn’t work, (i.e. it no longer points to an active page or destination).

Concept
We refer to a concept as a Web site design, which shows exactly how the site will look, but not necessarily including the correct text or functionality.

CMS (Content Management System)
This is a computer software system for organising creation and publication of Web pages, documents and other content.

Crawlers
These are programmes created by search engines that trawl or ‘crawl’ round the Internet collecting information about the Web sites. (Crawlers are also known as spiders.)

CSS Cascading Style Sheet
A CSS is used in conjunction with HTML to provide formatting information to the Web page.

Dead end page
A dead end page presents the Web site visitor with no options for going forward. To go back to the page previously visited, a visitor may only use the back arrow on a Web browser.

Deep linking
This is the term giving to the process of linking pages in the lower levels of your Web site from your home page (or from other pages) to help search engines index them.

Description tag
This is the Meta tag, which provides a description of a Web page. This description can be displayed by the search engines in their search result pages and is also especially helpful to visually impaired Web users.

Directory
A directory or a Web directory is a Web site that arranges its Web pages in categories (see NZS.com for an example). Unlike a search engine, a directory does not crawl the Internet gathering information, instead it relies on the information provided by you or your Web master when requesting to be included in its listings.

DMOZ
This is a long-established Web directory edited by volunteer editors. It’s also known as the ODP (Open Directory Project).

Domain name
A unique name assigned to an IP Address that identifies an Internet Web site.

Doorway page
This is the name given to a Web page designed solely for the purpose of enhancing rankings for a Web site on search engines. A doorway page tends to be a page designed without any heed to providing useful information to the site visitor.

Download time
This is the time taken by a Web site to download to a Web browser. The download time depends on a number of factors including the speed of the Internet connection and the size of the files.

Download
To download means to copy files/ programmes from a remote computer to your own.

Duplicate content
Duplicate content occurs when two Web sites publish the same, or extremely similar information.

Dynamic content
This refers to content generated by databases depending on a user’s request. Pages created in Flash or which use other animation techniques are also sometimes referred to as dynamic.

Exit page
This refers to the page that the site visitors leave a Web site from.

FAQ
This is the acronym commonly used which stands for “frequently asked questions”.

Flash
A software package used to create animations or highly dynamic Web sites.

FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
This is the name given to the process in which files are uploaded and downloaded from a Web server.

Google AdWords
This means of advertising on the Google search engine. Small text ads are served up on the right hand side of the Google search result page when specific keywords / key phrases are entered in the Google search box.

Google
This is world’s largest, and arguably most popular search engine and has many country-specific variations, which serve up refined results to users in specific countries.

HTML Hyper Text Markup Language
This is one of the languages commonly used to create Web pages.

Indexing
When a search engine visits your Web site and stores information about it, the process is known as ‘indexing’.

Internet provider
A business or organisation that offers people access to the Internet and related services. New Zealand examples include Telecom, Slingshot and iHug.

JPG (or JPEG) Joint Photographic Experts Group
This is a format used for saving images and photographs as the file sizes remain relatively small and the quality of images remains high.

Keyword
This is a word entered into a search box to look for information relevant to that word.

Keyword phrase
Several keywords entered into a search box to look for information relevant to that phrase.

Keyword tag
This is one of the tags used to help search engines index a Web site or Web page.

Link
The means for connecting two Web sites or Web pages.

Link exchange
The process through which two Web site owners agree to link to each others Web sites.

Link farms
Link farms have been used to create a complex linking structures, which may artificially inflate participating Web sites link popularity.

Link popularity
Link popularity is (mainly) defined by the quality and quantity of links found by search engines for your Web page.

Meta tag
A tag created to provide information about a Web site or a Web page.

Mirror sites
These are Web sites or Web pages, which publish the same or very nearly the same content as another.

Montage
Several images combined to form one composite image or artwork.

MSN Microsoft Network
This is an international search engine and the New Zealand version is one of the most popular in the country.

Online marketing
Marketing on the Internet through means such as Web sites, search engine marketing, email marketing, banner advertising, article submission and press releases.

Optimisation / optimization (US spelling)
Optimisation used in the context of search engine optimisation or Web marketing refers to the techniques used to promote a Web page or Web site on the Internet.

Placeholder page
This is a temporary page used for your domain name, whilst your Web site is being developed.

PR (Google PageRank)
A number of link popularity factors combine to produce a rating that Google assigns to your Web site. This rating is called PageRank and is a score between 0-10. It can be viewed from the Google Toolbar.

Prototype
The agreed design concept, but with correct text and functionality. In essence this is the finished Web site.

Query
A search made using a keyword or keyword phrase.

Ranking/s
This is the term given to the position of a Web site on a search engine results page for searches made using specific keywords or keyword phrase.

Reciprocal link
This is a link to your Web site from a Web site that you link to.

Referrer
When someone visits your Web site by way of clicking a link published on another Web site, the other Web site is called a referrer (this may be a search engine).

Search engines
Search engines are Web sites that enable people to search and find information on the Internet. Well known search engines include Google, MSN, Yahoo! and AOL.

SERP Search Engine Results Page
After entering a query on a search engine, the search engine delivers a results page, which may list both natural and paid listings.

Spam
This refers to unsolicited, mass marketing through email.

Spamming
Techniques used by Web site owners to manipulate search engine results in their favour.

Submissions
Requests for a Web site or Web page to be included in a search engine or directory are often referred to as submissions.

Title tag
This is the meta tag used to define the title of a Web page. The title of a Web page can be viewed on the top bar of a browser window.

Traffic
A term used to describe visitors to a Web site.

Unique visits
Seen in a number of statistics programmes, unique visits refers top the number of people who have visited a Web site at least once in a fixed time frame.

URL Uniform Resource Locator
Pronounced ‘earl’ this is the address of a Web page or a Web site on the Internet. The URL for Avatar’s Web site is: https://www.avatar.co.nz.

Web site

WYSIWYG What You See Is What You Get
You may see this term in software that that renders the same or very similar output as the final screen display.
